Finally some competition has arrived for Apple iPhone in the new S6 Edge. A year ago I was excited about the HTC One M8 but on inspection it was clunky and didn’t fit in the palm very well. The plastic speaker grills also seemed to be a downgrade from the M7. The Galaxy S5 was just as disappointing; it’s basically the same phone as the S2 with a slightly different back, visually its quite disappointing. The iPhone 6 aside from being slightly to big (in my humble opinion) hits the nail on the head for aesthetic, its slim, subtle touch ID home button & its aluminum mold, like all apple devices, boats quality and attraction.
Now the S6 edge, this article is not about function but let me just express my opinion about the features of the S6 edge model that utilize its curved screen. Shit. But to start lets focus on the rest of the design. Like the iPhone the S6 has rounded metallic edges with the power button on the right side and charging dock on the bottom center, headphone jack bottom left and speaker bottom right and volume buttons top left. Although this is all very nice indeed it’s exactly like an iPhone 6, 10 points for design -8 points for plagiarizing. The bright Gorilla Glass back housing attracts attention, it’s differentiating itself from the iPhone’s or HTC’s reserved brushed aluminum back but could resemble the iPhone 4/4s’s back glass housing, if you were a bit of a customizer back in 2011 you may have switched the factory black or white for a metallic blue, green or gold back housing, I remember installing a few of these on the iPhone 4 and 4s at customers requests so for me the S6 back is nothing new. The design of the home button and capacitive light buttons are brought forward from the S5 so nothing new there. Why the hype then ?
The curved screen is visually spectacular, that’s it. It rockets mobile phone design into the future of what’s possible. It’s the only significant new design point I have seen in mobile phones since 2010 with the arrival of the iPhone 4 and its aluminum frame and back glass housing.
The one other point I would make is the metal frame has been filed down at the sides to create a 4 – 6mm (not entirely sure without viewing it) flat edge so it grips better. This has been mentioned in a number of articles and puts a design & functional points over the i6.
Estimated Repair Costs
I wonder how the curved screen is manufactured, whether the sides are a lens bending light so the screen can be viewed at the sides (a flat LCD) or whether the LCD is actually curved like the new curved TV’s. Either way if you drop an S6 edge then it’s going to be bluddy expensive to repair. Samsung screens are the most expensive of any mobile phone so the change in tech will almost certainly add 50% to the price of a screen replacement, expect a $600 price tag for a screen replacement initially before settling in at $400 – $475 once the supply catches up to the demand of how many screens get broken. This assumes of course that Gorilla Glass 4 still allows the internal LCD to crack just as it did in the S4 & S5 or the glass will crack with a nice impact on concrete or tiles.
